  Position Announcement

  Lecturer (PSOE), Education Studies 

  The Education Studies program at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) invites applications for a faculty position (preferred start date July 2007) to support the UCSD Science & Mathematics Education Program. Part of the UC Systemwide California Teach program, it is designed to encourage more UC undergraduate math and science majors to become highly-qualified K-12 public school teachers.   At UCSD, a Lecturer PSOE (with potential for security of employment) holds a full time faculty position, and is hired and promoted based on teaching excellence. Faculty members hired in this position follow a promotion track paralleling that of assistant professors, and are members of the UCSD Academic Senate.

  The successful candidate will provide leadership in the development and coordination of the EDS Science and Mathematics Education Minors, as well as teaching a variety of undergraduate education foundation and practica courses within Education Studies. The successful candidate will also coordinate efforts among Education Studies, participating Physical Science departments, and local K-12 schools.

  Desired qualifications include: a doctoral degree in a discipline relevant to mathematics and science education; evidence of outstanding teaching at the secondary and post-secondary level; experience recruiting and preparing mathematics and science teachers; experience in program development, and excellent communication skills. In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience working with K-12 school district personnel to improve school outcomes, particularly in schools serving large minority populations.

  The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary faculty whose research interests include educational reform, linguistic and cultural diversity, distributed cognition and learning, teacher professional development, school leadership and change, family and school partnerships, and uses of educational technology in teaching and learning.   Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, based on UC pay scales.

  Closing Date: Review of application files will begin on 8 January 2007 and will continue until the position is filled.
