The High Cost of High School Dropouts
What the Nation Pays for Inadequate High Schools
Every school day, seven thousand students become dropouts. Annually, that adds up to about 1.2 million students who will not graduate high school with their peers as scheduled. Lacking a high school diploma, these individuals will be far more likely to spend their lives periodically unemployed, on government assistance, or cycling in and out of the prison system.

            Highlights:

a.. The average annual income for a high school dropout in 2004 was $16,485, compared to $26,156 for a high school graduate, a difference of $9,671
b.. If the students who dropped out of the class of 2006 had graduated, the nation's economy would have benefited from an additional $309 billion in income over their lifetimes.
