The University of California Linguistic Minority Research Institute (UC LMRI) and the Arizona State University Linguistic Minority Research Initiative (ASU LMRI) of the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education announce a Call for Papers on the topic of "Restrictive Language Policies and Educational Outcomes for English Learners: 10 Years After Proposition 227".

2008 marks the 10-year anniversary of California's Proposition 227, which dramatically curtailed the use of primary language instruction in California. Similar propositions were subsequently passed in Arizona and Massachusetts.

UC LMRI and ASU LMRI are accepting papers that examine the impact of Proposition 227 and the similar propositions in both Arizona and Massachusetts, to what extent they have resulted in the improvement of education and educational outcomes for EL students, and to consider how the field of education should proceed in attempting to improve academic outcomes for these students. Proposals that consider the impact of the propositions on school, family, and community contexts are also welcomed. Accepted papers are to be presented at a two-day conference to be held May 2-3, 2008 in Sacramento, California. Papers are welcome from both academics and educators, as long as they are based on either academic research or teacher (action) research. The deadline for proposals has been extended through January 11, 2008. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by February 1, 2008 and final papers will be due April 1, 2008.

Selected presenters (and up to two co-presenters) will have their conference registration fees waived. Travel and lodging are the responsibility of the presenters.

Prospective presenters should send a two-page (single-spaced) prospectus that includes a brief discussion of the topic, research literature, methods, and significance of the paper, and an abstract (100-150 words), along with the following information: Presentation Title, Name of Presenter and Brief Bio/CV, Title, Institution, Mailing Address, Email Address, and Phone Number by January 11, 2008 to Conference Coordinator, UC LMRI at: grants at lmri.ucsb.edu. Notification will be made by February 1, 2008. Completed papers must be submitted to UC LMRI no later than April 1, 2008.
